�HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today proclaimed that HHS personnel will assist the states of Louisiana and Texas in evacuating an estimated 900 special medical needs patients today and in providing care for evacuated patients. The aid is portion of HHS' aid to states as they prepare for the expected landfall of Hurricane Gustav.
"Our thoughts are with those potentially in the track of Hurricane Gustav," Secretary Leavitt aforesaid. "HHS is working close with the states and rapidly mobilizing medical personnel and necessary resources to be ready to help those impacted by this major storm."
HHS has activated the National Disaster Medical System, a federally coordinated operation that tin assist united States Department of State and local officials in dealing with major disasters. Approximately 1,100 HHS personnel ar in place today, including members of Disaster Medical Assistance Teams which allow for emergency medical response. An additional 450 Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers have been deployed by Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Joxel Garcia, an admiral in the Commissioned Corps.
Medical Reserve Corps units in southwestern Alabama have been also been activated. Medical Reserve Corps units in Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee are on standby, ready to augment the state and local response to Hurricane Gustav.

The Sheffield singer/guitarist's performance of 'Lady Solitude' prompted several couples to slow dance at the side of the main throng.
Hawley's set featured his biggest come to to date, 'Tonight The Street Are Ours', merely was tenacious by sound problems.
He unsympathetic his typeset with an extended version of 'Oh My Love', closing minutes on the stage for the day.

Jessica Alba - Report - Alba Gives Birth To Baby Girl
JESSICA ALBA has reportedly welcomed a baby girl into the world, becoming a first-time parent with her husband CASH WARREN.
The Hollywood couple are celebrating the birth of a baby girl, who was born on Sunday (08Jun09) at Los Angeles' Cedars Sinai Medical Center, according to America's Us Weekly.
The tot's name and weight are as yet unknown.
The Sin City beauty married beau Cash Warren last month (May08) in a secret ceremony, failing to invite even close friends and family.
The pair met in 2004 on the set of blockbuster The Fantastic Four.
Alba and Warren recently moved into a $4 million (GBP2 million) mansion in L.A. in preparation for their first child, and Alba admits it is set to be a busy year.
She says, "It's a lot of stress to buy a house, have a baby and get married in six months. It's a lot of life-changing decisions. I'm really, really secure."

Bruce Forsyth celebrates 80th birthday
Showbiz legend Bruce Forsyth celebrates his 80th birthday today.
In an interview last week, Forsyth insisted that he had no intention of retiring just yet. He said: "I always said I'll pack it in when I've lost the buzz. I still get the buzz."
Forsyth has hosted BBC1's 'Strictly Come Dancing' since it began in 2004.
His other hit shows over the years have included 'The Generation Game', 'Play Your Cards Right' and 'Bruce's Price Is Right', as well as hosting The Royal Command Performance. Other work included an appearance in the Disney film 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks'.
BBC1 will celebrate Forsyth's birthday on Sunday evening with a tribute show, 'Happy Birthday Brucie', featuring stars such as Liza Minnelli, Paul O'Grady and Ronnie Corbett.
Forsyth himself will perform a dance routine with the cast of West End musical 'Billy Elliot'.

Kelley Stoltz grew up in the Detroit area, just presently establish his way to San Francisco. Nate Dogg - Manager Nate Dogg Is Not Dead
The manager of hip-hop star NATE DOGG has blasted "vicious" rumours alleging the singer is dead, insisting he is alive and well.
Snoop Dogg's cousin - real name Nathaniel Dawayne Hale - was said to have passed away at the weekend (10-11May08) after suffering complications following his stroke late last year (07).
The news spread across the internet after a message was posted on the 38-year-old singer's MySpace page - but his manager Rod MCCrew insists the cruel reports are all false.
And he claims the MySpace post was made by a member of the public who had hacked into Nate Dogg's account on the social networking site.
MCCrew tells XXLmag.com, "It's a vicious rumour. And it's run amok."
Nate Dogg has been recovering at home since he was hospitalised in December (07), but MCCrew reveals he is gradually regaining his health.
He adds, "We're pleased with his progress."
